As for Depp, I agree with True Horror and Spliff. JD is pretty good at becoming a character, be it doing eccentric roles (Jack, Hunter, etc) to more serious dramatic stuff. I used to not care for him either until he gradually started picking better parts and movies.
I haven't seen that Astronaut movie he did though, never looked interesting and I've usually heard that it sucks pretty bad.

the thing about why Depp's so DAMN good (he's had his shitty movies, but alot more really good ones)
is that he actually cares abotu the role, and he tries to base alot of roles on real people (whether they're real or not, I mean) and it brings a better depth to the stuff
